Hockey fans forgive and forget – as usual

Hockey fans can sometimes behave like abuse victims.

How else to explain the rapturous welcome the NHL has received since it was announced on January 6 that the league’s latest work stoppage was coming to an end?

Arenas are sold out and viewers at home are watching in record numbers now that the season is finally, belatedly, underway.

Until January 6, it would have been tempting to refer to the lockout as “disastrous” or “devastating,” given the uncertainty of how or when it would end. Would the NHL return this year, or at all? Nobody knew.
